Notes:
This slide shows the project location. The goal of this project is acquisition of estuary, shoreline and uplands at the mouth of Chimacum Creek for a variety of recreational purposes, including shoreline recreation, interpretation of estuarine habitat and habitat restoration efforts, and other passive recreation opportunities afforded by the relatively pristine .
It is important to recognize how close this property is to the intensely developed residential and commercial along the I-5 corridor, and to recognize that development to the north and south are inevitable.
Jefferson County in general, and the Quimper Peninsula in particular does not fit well with traditional models for correlating population with number of acres of parkland, or number of front feet of beach, because so many people - over 2 million per year - come from out of the area, in particular from the I-5 Corridor, to recreate in East Jefferson County.
As a result, acquisition of park property in this area serves not only the needs of local residents, but others in the region as well, as it inevitably attract visitors from outside the area and help reduce the deficit for passive recreational opportunities in this area.
