Public Need - Inventory
Notes:
Recreational Opportunity Spectrum Matrix
The project site is suited to passive recreation & meets recreational and open space acquisition criteria, as addressed in the Parks and Recreation Comprehensive Plan, as mentioned. Therefore, Active recreation needs (Active Recreation Playgrounds, Ball-fields, Boat Launches, Golf Courses, Swimming Beaches,Campgrounds, Hiking Trails ) are specifically not addressed in this presentation.
This chart catalogues passive recreation facilities (enumerated previously) in terms of 2 service areas reflecting reasonable walking distance and reasonable driving distance. It also addresses perceived importance of the recreational amenities offered at each catalogued site.
The contention that NONE of the existing sites offer comparable recreational amenities is a strong claim, but can be easily understood when one considers the impact of highway, residential development or heavy industry directly adjacent to a beach.
The Parks and Recreation Comprehensive Plan does not yet fully reflect the impact of the "graying of the community" that is occurring and the resulting change in the community’s appetite for varieties of passive recreational experiences, but this will surely increase the need for sites offering solitude.
